A Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland working paper found that showing U.S. households bitcoin's 14.3% trailing 12-month return raised later self-reported crypto ownership by 2.41 percentage points, about a 23% relative lift from an 11% starting rate. What the numbers actually tested
The study ran a randomized control trial inside a 2025 survey that reached 5352 respondents. One group saw only the control screen. Others received either text or a simple chart that highlighted Bitcoin's 14.3 percent gain over the prior year. Follow-up questions tracked ownership through the end of 2025.
Households that saw the return information raised their desired crypto allocation by roughly two percentage points from the control average of 4.3 percent. Expected returns on crypto also moved higher, up 3.2 points in the text arm and 1.2 points in the chart arm. The ownership effect registered at 2.41 points overall and 2.48 points in the chart treatment.
